It's official. I along with other members of my community formed a new Matlacha Chamber of Commerce. Our professional goal is to help promote local area businesses as well as entice tourists to Spend The Day In Matlacha. Our mission is to "promote Matlacha as a destination for shopping, business, ecotourism, fishing and the arts district and to foster and maintain the favorable relationship with local government community groups and local residence while preserving the unique and artistic qualities of the historic fishing village of Matlacha through the business community." At our September 20, meeting we unanimously voted Matlacha artist extraordinaire Leoma Lovegrove as our new president, Mike Shevlin, also voted Pine Island's Best Real Estate Agent, was elected as vice president, yours truly Karen Moran of Magnet Social Media as the secretary and treasurer and Donna Loibl as the parliamentarian. As I have extensive hospitality and tourism marketing experience having worked with Disney and many others, I'm excited to help promote this fab little island I now call home.Become of Member of the Matlacha Chamber of CommerceIf you own a Matlacha business and would like to become a member of the Matlacha Chamber of Commerce, please complete our Matlacha Business Member application. If you own a business outside of Matlacha and would like to become a member of the Matlacha Chamber of Commerce, please complete our General Business Member application. Facebook Rumor & Promoted PostsA few months back Facebook implemented promoted posts. You can read all about how to buy a Facebook promoted post from Social Fresh. Thing is since then, rumors are still swirling about what Facebook's promoted posts actually mean for brands. Just this morning I saw this post. "Facebook recently implemented different settings so that fan pages will have to pay to promote their posts and if they don't then only 10% of their fans/followers will see the posts. Not getting all of our posts? Follow these instructions to get all the posts from Tarpon Lodge and your other favorite pages.
1) Open the Fan Page you want to continue to receive posts for. 2) Mouse over the gear wheel icon next to the Like box and click it. 3) Click Add To Interest Lists 4) Create an interest list name and all of the posts you want to see from any Fan Page you've Liked will now show up.
Please share this with your friends so they will continue to receive posts from their favorite pages!" This is completely totally 110% false. Facebook is not penalizing brand pages by only allowing 10% of Likes to receive a status update in their feed. Facebook has a very complicated algorithm it uses to bring a status update forward. It's based on what you post, time of day you post, how much fan interaction you already have and a slew of other things. Under every post you'll see a number of people who have seen that actual post. Or under the "Insights" area on your admin page check out "Reach" to see the number of people being reached by post. The Visit Pine Island & Matlacha Facebook page is a perfect example of a page not using promoted posts but still getting great reach and virality. So how do you get people to actually Like a Facebook post? Check out Two easy ways to get Facebook likes, comments & shares or more some of these Facebook tips. HOW TO: Block businesses form spamming a business Facebook pageI hate spam. Not only the kind that comes in the can but even more so the electronic kind. This morning I woke to a local "marketing" company not only liking my Facebook business page but pretty much every other Facebook business page I manage. I immediately knew something was up. So I checked out their Facebook page and there they were in the recent posts by others section. " Thanks for the like. Right back at you!" And then (shakes head and laughs) the page owner posted this a gazillion times, " Thanks for "friending" me! Please take a moment to "like" my new page!"Friending a business page? Uhm businesses are not supposed to act as a real person - Facebook and FTC privacy regulations require businesses to only open Facebook business pages - but that's another post for another time. As I knew it was only a matter of time before the spam posts started on my Facebook business pages - as a preventative measure I blocked this business page. Thing is Facebook doesn't make it very easy to locate how to block a business page before they even comment. While on your business page at the top Admin Panel - Click "New Likes"
- From the pull down at the top of the new likes box where it says "people who like this" select "pages that like this"
- Off to the right of that is an X
- Click the X
- Another box appears that says "Are you sure you want to remove who ever it is from this page?"
- Click yes but also click "ban user"
Ta-da! You have now blocked a business from spamming your Facebook page. READERS: Has another brand ever spammed your page? What have you done about it? Twitter announced today they're following in the footsteps of Facebook and placing more emphasis on photos. Twitter's profile redesign allows users to upload a new header photo. "New profiles also help you get to know people better through their pictures. Photo streams now appear below anyone’s most recent Tweets on iPhone, Android and iPad. Swipe through the stream to see the photos other users have shared or tap any thumbnail to view their photos in fullscreen. While the header photo keeps your profile simple and consistent on iPhone, iPad and Android, you will also still have an additional photo – a background photo – on twitter.com. Upload a background image to complement your header and profile photos." After futzing with my Twitter header photo for a bit I discovered it's best to have a bio with limited info as the placement of the copy competes with your header photo. Thus, it's best to keep the photo and simple as possible. READERS: What do you think of the Twitter's new header photo?
