Looking for Florida -- and -- Catch & Release Pinterest Community Board Pinners.

Ahhh...Pinterest...Can't.  Stop.  Pinning...

I like I'm sure a lot of you is completely addicted to Pinterest.  It's a fun way to keep my recipes, home decor ideas, DIY projects and pretty much any other interest I have all nice and neatly organized.  It's also been a great way to meet other like minded folks.  As such, I created two Pinterest Community Boards where other folks can pin and I'm looking for Pinterest pinners.
The first is my personal This Is My Florida Community Pinterest Board.  It's a collection of pictures that really showcase the beautiful state I'm blessed to live in.

The other is for my TrueFlies client.  Being an avid fly fishing apparel company TrueFlies Pinterest page is focused on fly fishing.  As such, we have a TrueFlies Catch & Release Fishing Community Pinterest Board.  And as the name states - it's for showcasing some pretty amazing pictures of catch and release fishing.

The benefit of joining Pinterest Community Boards is that it allows you to gain more followers by promoting your pins on someone else's board.  And my TrueFlies client has a weekly promotion so following their pins allows you to enter to win some great fly fishing apparel.

If you'd like to join either of these Pinterest Community Boards - just comment on any picture in the board and ask to join.  I only ask you don't spam the boards, or worse post any inappropriate pictures.  If ya do they'll be removed and you'll be block from the board.

Thanks everyone and happy pinning!

HOW TO: Track Pinterest Referral Traffic To YouR Website

Recent reports have shown Pinterest is a magnet for referral traffic making Pinterest the 4th largest global traffic driver - ahead of Yahoo organic search.

So while it's great your website is getting more referral traffic from Pinterest - how exactly do you know who is pinning content on your website?

Unknown to many - Pinterest has a dandy little feature that allows you to see who's pinning content on your website to their Pinterest boards.

Simply enter this URL into your browser http://pinterest.com/source/YourWebsiteURLhere.com (be sure to change "YourWebsiteURLhere.com" to your domain name).

It's literally that easy.

While it may look like a lot of complicated instructions - don't freak out.  It's really very easy peasy to add a Pinterest tab for your Facebook page.  There are two steps below - the first is to add the Pinterest logo to a Facebook Pinterest tab and the other is to add the Facebook Pinterest tab itself.  Two parts.  Easy peasy.

Promise!  :)

To add Pinterest logo to Pinterest tab
You can skip this part if you don’t want to add a logo – which I don’t advise as the logo has recognition and a generic image could easily be over-looked.

  1. Go to https://developers.facebook.com/apps
  2. Click Create New App at the top right
  3. Type Pinterest in App Name box
  4. Save the Pinterest logo in this blog post onto your desktop to use as the Pinterest button for your new Pinterest Facebook tab
  5. Click Edit icon
  6. Scroll down and click on the Page Tab section
  7. Fill in all 3
  8. Page Tab Name
  9. Name tab “Pinterest”
  10. Page Tab URL
  11. Change XXXXXX with your page’s App ID number found at the top of the page http://XXXXXX.iframehost.com/tab
  12. Secure Page Tab URL (Don’t forget the “S”)
  13. Change XXXXXX with your page’s App ID number found at the top of the page https://XXXXXX.iframehost.com/tab
  14. Click on App on Facebook section
  15. Fill in 2 boxes
  16. Canvas URL
  17. Change XXXXXX with your page’s App ID number found at the top of the page http://XXXXXX.iframehost.com/
  18. Secure Page Tab URL (Don’t forget the “S”)
  19. Change XXXXXX with your page’s App ID number found at the top of the page https://XXXXXX.iframehost.com/
  20. Copy and paste this URL http://www.facebook.com/add.php?api_key=YOURAPPID&pages into browser making sure to change YOURAPPID with App numbers used above
  21. Select the page you want to add the Pinterest button to and click Add Pinterest Button
  22. Copy your App Secret ID found at top of page under App ID number
  23. Go to your pages wall – Click on the new Pinterest icon
  24. Be patient as it may take a few minutes for this next part to populate
  25. Type your App Secret ID

YEAH!  You just set up your new Pinterest tab to have a Pinterest logo. Now...ya need to set up the Pinterest tab itself to populate your Pinterest pins.  Is all this making your head hurt yet?

To populate Pinterest pins into your new Pinterest Facebook tab
  1. Go to https://apps.facebook.com/iframehost/
  2. Click Install Page Tab
  3. Choose the page you want to add the iframe app to
  4. Click Add Static iFrame Tab
  5. Click Welcome
  6. Click Authorize the Tab application
  7. Click Allow
  8. Select URL and enter the mobile URL for your Pinterest account (“http://m.pinterest.com/xxxx”).  If you don’t use your mobile URL the content on the page is too large. While there’s a scroll bar it just doesn’t look clean and as such is best to use the mobile version.
  9. Note: If you only want to link to a specific board, locate the board on your Pinterest account and copy that link instead
  10. Change the name in the "Tab Name" field to Pinterest
  11. Save settings
  12. Authorize app and you’re good to go!

See I told ya it was easy peasy!!

A few months back one of my Twitter pals Jackie Ng @Jacoutofthebox sent me an invite to get on Pinterest. And she just didn't casually send an invite - she raved about it. It's so fab-u-luss. I'm in love with it. Completely addicted. Can't. Stop. Pinning.

For those unfamiliar with Pinterest, it's a social network built on community recommendations. Members “pin” things to the site they like, usually photos.  Think of it like flipping through a magazine and folding the page for an item you like.  Pinterest allows you to do that electronically while others can do the same with items you posted.

Ugh I thought - yet another social platform?!?

I left the invitation in my inbox for months and I completely forgot about it.  Until last week when I finally ventured on over to Pinterest and tried to open an account. Pinterest is still in Beta and invite only.  Grrr....  Oh...wait....Jackie sent me that invite. Jazz hands!

Heaven help that woman cuz I could strangle her now.

Can't.  Stop.  Pinning.

I opened a Pinterest account for myself personally and for Jane Nation - an online community for women that I manage.  Here's what I found:

  1. The latest Pinterest demographics from April 2011 state more than half of Pinterest members are women.  Online guestimates today are there are now significantly more women on Pinterest than men.  When I was looking for friends to follow - only two of my male Facebook friends was on Pinterest while 20 other Facebook friends were women.
  2. ComScore states Pinterest has more than 5 million members and is growing. What's even more interesting is this growth has been fueled organically by its members and not Pinterest itself.  Nothing like brand loyalty among women!
  3. Over eight percent of traffic to JaneNation.com last week was from Pinterest from pins such as manicure tutorials, fashion and recipes.  This week - over thirteen percent of Jane's traffic has been from Pinterest.

Not bad for merely adding info that's already on our site to another site.

HOWEVER, with that said Pinterest isn't all about just you.  So you should not merely pin items to Pinterest hoping to direct traffic back to your site.  As with all social platforms - you have to interact.
  1. Follow other like-minded brands and members.
  2. Repin, Like and comment on their pins.
  3. Ignite an online conversation.

Back-and-forth dialogue, repinning and liking is especially important if you're not a household name brand like Real Simple who is only following seven accounts and... while they've posted in excess of 1,500 pins, has yet to like a single one.  But because they're a household name brand, they have in excess of 22,000 followers.

Bottom line? If you're a brand that markets to women - Pinterest is where your target audience is hanging out online.  These women are actively looking for fun, useful information to make their lives easier.  So...why would you not want to fish where the fish are?
