UPDATE: 1/30/13
After reviewing the Google Analytics on my site...I've since discovered an insane amount of disturbing key word searches since I wrote this blog post - "horny teens" and a slew of other equally nasty terms...really people??

----------------------------

While I must admit I am fond of my own ta-ta's I am not a big fan of opening Facebook to see another woman's breast-ta-sis plastered in my Facebook feed.  Also not a fan of the bend -- waaayyy over -- with a thong and bam - there's another woman's lady parts saying hello.

Uhm.  Yikes.

Being the curious social media gal I am though, I always wonder about these pages.  How long have they been open?  Who are the ding bats that like the page or worse - who are the idiots posting neked pictures of themselves on Facebook?

So today when I saw the Horny Sex Girls Facebook page and a visual none of us really want to see - I reported the page.  After all the Horny Sex Girls bio does say...

it is a page for teens who wants sex pic but not porn !!
get enjoy by here u will gate large large boobs , pussy , sexy body !!

Neked pictures of anyone on Facebook is just wrong.  A Facebook page specifically for teens to enjoy - well all the stuff it says above? Ohhhh don't even get me started!

I reported the page only to get this wonderful response from Facebook why the page wouldn't be closed and the picture not removed.

Thank you for your report. We carefully reviewed the photo you reported, but found it doesn't violate our community standard on nudity and pornography so we didn't remove it.

Facebook describes nudity and pornography as
Facebook has a strict policy against the sharing of pornographic content and any explicitly sexual content where a minor is involved. We also impose limitations on the display of nudity. We aspire to respect people’s right to share content of personal importance, whether those are photos of a sculpture like Michelangelo's David or family photos of a child breastfeeding.

So let me get this straight...Facebook will remove this picture of a girl taking a bath -- and exposing her elbows -- but not remove Horny Sex Girls that targets teens?  Really?

Last I checked Facebook a picture of a half neked woman with pasties over her ginormous ta-ta's that says, "F... Me" isn't at all like Michelangelo's David or family photos of a child breastfeeding.

Just sayin'...

Facebook Timeline Dimensions

Even though Facebook changed over to the new Timeline in July, I still see a lot of folks unsure of the exact Timeline dimensions.

Here's a handy visual for easy reference detailing the semi-new Facebook Timeline dimensions.

Facebook Rumor & Promoted Posts

A few months back Facebook implemented promoted posts.  You can read all about how to buy a Facebook promoted post from Social Fresh.

Thing is since then, rumors are still swirling about what Facebook's promoted posts actually mean for brands.  Just this morning I saw this post.

"Facebook recently implemented different settings so that fan pages will have to pay to promote their posts and if they don't then only 10% of their fans/followers will see the posts.  Not getting all of our posts? Follow these instructions to get all the posts from Tarpon Lodge and your other favorite pages.

1) Open the Fan Page you want to continue to receive posts for.

2) Mouse over the gear wheel icon next to the Like box and click it.
3) Click Add To Interest Lists
4) Create an interest list name and all of the posts you want to see from any Fan Page you've Liked will now show up.

Please share this with your friends so they will continue to receive posts from their favorite pages!"

This is completely totally 110% false.

Facebook is not penalizing brand pages by only allowing 10% of Likes to receive a status update in their feed. Facebook has a very complicated algorithm it uses to bring a status update forward. It's based on what you post, time of day you post, how much fan interaction you already have and a slew of other things.

Under every post you'll see a number of people who have seen that actual post. Or under the "Insights" area on your admin page check out "Reach" to see the number of people being reached by post. The Visit Pine Island & Matlacha Facebook page is a perfect example of a page not using promoted posts but still getting great reach and virality.

So how do you get people to actually Like a Facebook post? Check out Two easy ways to get Facebook likes, comments & shares or more some of these Facebook tips.

HOW TO: Block businesses form spamming a business Facebook page

I hate spam.  Not only the kind that comes in the can but even more so the electronic kind. This morning I woke to a local "marketing" company not only liking my Facebook business page but pretty much every other Facebook business page I manage.

I immediately knew something was up.  So I checked out their Facebook page and there they were in the recent posts by others section.

"Thanks for the like. Right back at you!"
And then (shakes head and laughs) the page owner posted this a gazillion times, "Thanks for "friending" me! Please take a moment to "like" my new page!"

Friending a business page? Uhm businesses are not supposed to act as a real person - Facebook and FTC privacy regulations require businesses to only open Facebook business pages - but that's another post for another time.

As I knew it was only a matter of time before the spam posts started on my Facebook business pages - as a preventative measure I blocked this business page.  Thing is Facebook doesn't make it very easy to locate how to block a business page before they even comment.

While on your business page at the top Admin Panel
  1. Click "New Likes"
  2. From the pull down at the top of the new likes box where it says "people who like this" select "pages that like this"
  3. Off to the right of that is an X
  4. Click the X
  5. Another box appears that says "Are you sure you want to remove who ever it is from this page?"
  6. Click yes but also click "ban user"

Ta-da!  You have now blocked a business from spamming your Facebook page.

Two easy ways to get Facebook Likes, comments & shares

Having a tough time eliciting any reaction from your Facebook community?

Fret no more - here are two easy peasy ways to get more Likes, comments and shares on your Facebook page.

  1. Post a picture.  A picture says a thousand words and with Facebook this couldn't be more true.  And no not a thumbnail tiny picture from a blog post - but an actual picture.  Even better would be to snap a shot from Instagram, DipTic or any of the other cool Smartphone camera apps out there.
  2. Ask your community to LIKE your post.  While it's not OK to be that person on the street corner begging for spare change it is OK to ask your Facebook community to LIKE your post.  Don't believe me? Check out the Visit Pine Island Facebook post as a perfect example.  When this picture was posted there were only slightly more than 400 Facebook LIKES, yet...59 folks Liked that one little ole post, 2 people commented and better still 2 more folks shared it on their wall.  Not bad interaction for a page with under 500 Facebook Likes.

Check out this recent Mashable Infographic "How to Get More Likes, Shares on Facebook."

Magnet Social Media, Social Media Magnet, Social Media Fort Myers, Karen Moran, How to legally run a Facebook promotion
HOW TO: Legally run a Facebook promotion

For reasons unknown some brands hop on Facebook and merely start executing tactics.  Let's run a Facebook promotion today!  Yeah, that sounds great!  We'll just post one status update with a few words and that's it, right?

Uhm...no.

Running a Facebook promotion -- as with any offline promotion -- requires not only a well-thought out strategy but also abiding by FTC - yes folks - FTC legal rules and regulations (Chapter 30 of Title 39 of the U.S. Code) that have been in place for decades.  Then each state also has their own specific set of rules and regulations for online or offline promotions and sweepstakes.

Why are rules and regulations necessary for promotions or sweepstakes?

Basically by following these rules you cover your tush against any sort of liability.  Say your brand opted to give away food and the winner got salmonella and then sued you.  Then what?  Your $10 give-away turned into a huge nightmare!

If that isn't enough - Facebook also has their required rules and regs for running a legal promotion or sweepstakes on their site.  Facebook rules and regulations (also below) are in place to remove their liability from a promotion gone awry.

But don't worry.  Check out the third party Facebook promotions app by North Social.  North Social is nicely integrated into Facebook.  Includes a legal like-gate option.  Gives easy step-by-step instructions.  And better still North Social offers a free-trial to get you started.

Don't want to bother abiding by any of these rules?  It's your option.  But as noted below...it's also Facebook's option to...."We reserve the right to reject or remove Pages for any reason."

When in doubt, please do take this free legal tip from powerhouse law firm Winston & Strawn
"Contact your attorney to ensure your fulfillment and ... practices are in compliance with all state laws."

Facebook Promotions - Rules & Regulations
If you use Facebook to communicate about or administer a promotion (such as a contest or sweepstakes), you are responsible for the lawful operation of that promotion, including the official rules, offer terms and eligibility requirements (e.g., age and residency restrictions), and compliance with regulations governing the promotion and all prizes offered in connection with the promotion (e.g., registration and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals). Please note that compliance with these guidelines does not constitute the lawfulness of a promotion. Promotions are subject to many regulations and if you are not certain that your promotion complies with applicable law, please consult with an expert.
i.    Promotions on Facebook must be administered within Apps on Facebook.com, either on a Canvas Page or a Page App.
ii.    Promotions on Facebook must include the following:
a.    A complete release of Facebook by each entrant or participant.
b.    Acknowledgment that the promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook.
c.    Disclosure that the participant is providing information to [disclose recipient(s) of information] and not to Facebook.
iii.    You must not condition registration or entry upon the user taking any action using any Facebook features or functionality other than liking a Page, checking in to a Place, or connecting to your app. For example, you must not condition registration or entry upon the user liking a Wall post, or commenting or uploading a photo on a Wall.
iv.    You must not use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry mechanism. For example, the act of liking a Page or checking in to a Place cannot automatically register or enter a promotion participant.
v.    You must not use Facebook features or functionality, such as the Like button, as a voting mechanism for a promotion.
vi.    You must not notify winners through Facebook, such as through Facebook messages, chat, or posts on profiles (timelines) or Pages.
vii.    Definitions:
a.    By “administration” we mean the operation of any element of the promotion, such as collecting entries, conducting a drawing, judging entries, or notifying winners.
b.    By “communication” we mean promoting, advertising or referencing a promotion in any way on Facebook, e.g., in ads, on a Page, or in a Wall post.

We reserve the right to reject or remove Pages for any reason. These terms are subject to change at any time.

Effective March 30th Facebook Timeline for Business Pages will be live for everyone.  I changed our Magnet Social Media Facebook page to the new Timeline immediately and love it!  However, according to a recent study only 1 in 4 brands haven't changed over yet.  And of those brands that have switched to the new Facebook Timeline for Business, most are not taking advantage of all the cool features.

Facebook "apps" that used to be along the left side of your page - are now just under the cover image to the right. For some reason, most folks aren't customizing the apps.  You can customize the order, name and image used to display the app. And, you can have a maximum of 12 apps with 4 visible at a time.

Rearrange Order
To rearrange the Facebook Timeline apps order simply click the down arrow off to the right.  Hover over any of the apps.  A little edit pencil will appear in the top right corner.  Click to whatever app you would like to use instead and this will replace the order the app appears.

Edit Name & Image
To edit the image or name for the app, click the down arrow off to the right.  Hover over any of the apps.  A little edit pencil will appear in the top right corner.  Click to "Edit Settings."  From here you can edit the name of the app tab or edit the thumbnail image used.  It's best to use a thumbnail image that's 111 x 74 pixels.
